The Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities is an association of municipalities working to build healthier, happier and more sustainable communities across Portugal. Its mission is to advance the World Health Organization’s Healthy Cities Project locally, drawing on local partners and resources. The network studies community health needs, proposes solutions and supports initiatives that encourage healthy lifestyles and improve quality of life. It also works with municipal health authorities on prevention and public health measures.
Its priorities include developing and implementing Local Health Plans, promoting health literacy, encouraging healthier choices and coordinating structured health activities among local, regional and national partners. The network shares information through its website, including news, publications, projects and initiatives, as well as an atlas, map and directory of participating municipalities. It also provides an activity and events calendar to help communities stay informed and take part in health-promoting activities. The association is based in Seixal and collaborates with a range of health, academic and municipal organisations, alongside related healthy-municipality networks in other countries.
