Rehkitzrettung Mecklenburg

Rehkitzrettung Mecklenburg is a regional wildlife protection initiative serving the Schwerin area. Its mission is to prevent the deaths of roe deer fawns and other animals hidden in fields during the mowing season. Because young fawns often stay still rather than flee from approaching machinery, they can be difficult to spot from the ground. The team uses drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras to scan registered fields, especially during cool morning hours when animals are easier to distinguish from the ground.

When wildlife is detected, team members carefully secure the animal in a suitable basket and mark its location so the farmer can avoid the area while mowing. The initiative coordinates in advance with farmers, who can register their fields for inspection. It also welcomes volunteers as drone pilots or field runners, offering training for those without prior experience. Community members can help by raising awareness, connecting the team with farmers, or providing financial and material support.
