American Religious Ecologies is an innovative project spearheaded by the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. This initiative aims to document and visualize the rich tapestry of American religious history by digitizing the 1926 U.S. Census of Religious Bodies, which includes detailed records for approximately 232,000 congregations across the country. Funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the project not only creates new datasets but also develops interactive maps and visualizations that showcase the religious ecologies of American communities.
The project employs a diverse team of researchers and developers who collaboratively explore denominational records and other historical data sources. Their work contributes significantly to the understanding of the evolution of religious practices in America, serving as a valuable resource for scholars, educators, and the general public alike. American Religious Ecologies is dedicated to advancing the study of religion and its impact on society by providing rich, accessible resources for exploration and citation.
