NYC’s Story: The City on Record is a digital exhibit from the New York City Department of Records & Information Services (DORIS), celebrating 400 years of the city’s history through government records. It brings together founding documents, images, written accounts of notable events, and records of everyday life to show how New York has changed and what has shaped it. The exhibit is organized around three questions: Who is a New Yorker? How was NYC built? What makes NYC, NYC? Visitors can explore collections connected to each theme or browse the complete exhibit, discovering primary sources that illuminate the city’s people, development, and identity.

The project aims to make historical and contemporary records accessible, helping audiences better understand the past and consider how it can guide a better future. DORIS preserves and provides public access to information and records about New York City government.
