REPHRAIN, the National Research Centre on Privacy, Harm Reduction and Adversarial Influence Online, is a UK research centre focused on protecting citizens online. Its mission is to deliver privacy at scale, minimise online harms and balance individual agency with social good. Led by the University of Bristol, the centre brings together researchers from the University of Bristol, University College London, the University of Bath, King’s College London and the University of Edinburgh.
Its multidisciplinary team spans computer science, law, psychology, international relations, public policy, design, management, digital humanities, political science, criminology and sociology. Supported by £8. 6 million in UK Research and Innovation funding for a three-year programme, REPHRAIN develops and shares research on digital safety and the challenges people face online.
The centre’s work includes research projects, publications, reports and public-facing outputs, alongside events, masterclasses and showcases. It also shares news, recommendations and consultation responses relating to online harms, privacy, media literacy and data-driven approaches. Through these activities, REPHRAIN connects research with policy and practice to support safer online environments
