About Restore Council
The Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Council is dedicated to revitalizing the intricate natural and economic landscape of the Gulf Coast, particularly in response to the devastating effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Established through the RESTORE Act in 2012, the Council oversees the allocation of 80% of penalties from the spill to the Gulf Coast Restoration Trust Fund, aimed at ecosystem restoration, economic recovery, and tourism enhancement. Comprised of governors from Gulf Coast states and federal agency leaders, the Council is committed to sustainable practices that will benefit future generations.
Their initiatives include the Council-Selected Restoration Component and the Spill Impact Component, which focus on targeted restoration efforts and public engagement. The 2022 Comprehensive Plan Update continues to build on previous strategies, ensuring comprehensive and collaborative restoration efforts across the region. By working with various partners and stakeholders, the Council promotes transparency and community involvement in restoring the invaluable Gulf Coast ecosystem.
