About Literary Review of Canada
The Literary Review of Canada is a renowned journal of ideas that has been at the forefront of intellectual discourse for over thirty years. Founded in 1991 by Patrice Dutil, a distinguished political scientist and historian, the magazine addressed a significant gap in Canada's cultural landscape. Initially a small-scale venture, it quickly gained traction for providing a platform for the country's finest and emerging writers to delve deeply into topics such as politics, philosophy, science, history, culture, and literature.
Throughout its history, the Literary Review of Canada has undergone various transformations. Carleton University Press acquired it in 1996, and in 2003, Bronwyn Drainie, a former CBC's Sunday Morning host, assumed the role of editor for a twelve-year tenure. Notably, in 2005, the magazine was honored with the Kroeger College Award for Public Discourse, lauded as nourishing, entertaining and inspiring.
Under the leadership of editor-in-chief Kyle Wyatt since January 2019, the magazine has been revitalized with a redesign, reflecting its commitment to showcasing the written word. In an era of shrinking books coverage, the Literary Review of Canada offers a platform for writers to thoughtfully engage with the country's intellectual output, spanning policy, politics, history, biography, and fiction. The magazine also features original essays and poetry, offering readers informed, captivating, and confident cultural context that cannot be found elsewhere.
As Canada's premier forum for discussions on books, culture, politics, and ideas, the Literary Review of Canada stands as a beacon of knowledge, passion, and intellectual curiosity. Its reputation as a unique and essential publication has been praised by prominent Canadian voices, including Elizabeth Hay and Dennis Lee.
