Rex, also known as the King of Carnival, is a New Orleans organization whose traditions have helped shape Mardi Gras since its founding in 1872. Each Carnival season, Rex issues a Proclamation inviting the public to join the celebration, and the organization’s parade is a signature part of the festivities. Its royal colors—purple, green, and gold—became the colors of Mardi Gras, while “If Ever I Cease to Love,” first played in a Rex parade, is now regarded as Carnival’s anthem. Rex and its Queen preside over the Rex Ball, which marks the glittering conclusion of Carnival.
The organization shares its history and traditions through publications and commemorative items, including Rex: 150 Years of the School of Design, a decade-by-decade account by Rex Historian Dr. Stephen Hales, and a Rex Proclamation art print by Royal Lithographer Matthew Hales. Rex also supports community initiatives through the Rex Foundation, which has awarded grants since 2006, totaling more than $16 million. Its website provides updates on Carnival, royalty, education, merchandise, and foundation activities.
