About Rota Histórica das Linhas de Torres
The Historical Route of the Lines of Torres Vedras (RHLT) invites visitors to explore a landmark of Portugal’s military and cultural heritage. The Lines of Torres Vedras were an extensive defensive system built during the Peninsular War, and their forts, redoubts, military roads and headquarters preserve the story of resistance to Napoleon’s invasions. Set amid protected countryside and notable natural landscapes, the route connects history with opportunities for outdoor discovery.
RHLT offers themed itineraries covering places such as Torres Vedras, Wellington’s headquarters, the defence of the Tagus, the Great Passes and the route from the Palace to the Atlantic. Visitors can plan journeys using an interactive map and choose from the long-distance GR 30 and shorter PR walking trails. The RHLT app adds information and challenges to the visit, while guided activities provide further ways to engage with the area. The organization also shares heritage news through its INVADE magazine and social channels, and offers products through its online shop.
