The Ride and Tie Association, established in 1988, is devoted to the stewardship of the sport of Ride & Tie. Their mission is to promote and enhance the sport through various activities. They disseminate information about Ride & Tie to attract new participants and improve the level of competition, horsemanship, and athletic performance.
The Association establishes rules and standards for Ride & Tie competitions to ensure the safety and well-being of both human and equine contestants. They also take measures to ensure the longevity of the sport. Ride & Tie is a unique sport that combines trail running, endurance riding, and strategic thinking.
The objective is for a team of two humans and one horse to traverse a 20-100 mile cross-country course. The team alternates between riding and running, strategically exchanging positions to maintain a suitable pace. This requires careful consideration of each team member's strengths, weaknesses, and the terrain of the course.
Ride & Tie is not just a physical challenge but also a mental one. The sport was invented by Bud Johns in 1971, inspired by historic accounts of people covering great distances on horseback and foot. The first-ever Levis Ride & Tie race was organized in St.
Helena, California, and since then, Ride & Tie has grown in popularity. To learn more about the sport's rich history, you can read Bud John's book, What Is This Madness? or 40 Years of Madness: A History of Ride & Tie Championships by Annette Parsons. The Ride & Tie Association is committed to supporting the growth of Ride & Tie and provides resources, including mentorship, clinics, videos, and a network of fellow enthusiasts.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, they also accept donations to further the sport. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a newcomer, join the Ride and Tie Association to experience the thrill and strategy of this one-of-a-kind sport
