About The Right to Read Network
Right to Read Night is a pivotal initiative launched by the National Coalition Against Censorship, designed to champion the freedom to read amid increasing censorship threats. In response to the alarming trend of book bans, this event encourages local groups nationwide to host gatherings during Banned Books Week, specifically from October 4 to 10, 2026. Participants will engage in meaningful discussions focused on significant works, starting with Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, a poignant account of growing up as an African American in the 1960s and 70s.
The initiative not only aims to foster community dialogue about the importance of literary freedom but also empowers individuals to defend against censorship. Through a comprehensive toolkit, Right to Read Night provides resources for hosts to organize events that promote awareness and celebrate diverse voices in literature. This movement stands as a robust response to the ongoing challenges faced by educators and librarians, reinforcing the vital role of free expression in society. Join the movement to protect our right to read.
