RIOT Network is on a mission to revolutionize internet access in underserved communities across South Africa. Tackling the issue of limited connectivity and high costs, RIOT develops innovative network technologies that empower households and small businesses to deploy and operate their own broadband infrastructure. Traditional network rollouts in low-income areas have become too expensive for internet service providers, creating a significant accessibility gap.
Introducing their User Operated Network Infrastructure (UONI), RIOT's solution is CROWDNet. This groundbreaking technology condenses all the components of a last-mile network into a user-friendly device called a Core Node. These Core Nodes automatically connect with each other to form a mesh network, expanding coverage throughout a neighborhood.
Users can access internet services by connecting to a Core Node using a regular mobile WiFi device or fixed WiFi router. By sharing bandwidth and costs, the CROWDNet devices enhance the coverage and capacity of existing infrastructure, making internet access more affordable.
