RISE Self-Defence

RISE Self-Defence is a Cairns, Queensland-based organisation making self-defence training accessible to girls and women in the community. Its programs are designed for girls aged eight and older and adult women of any age, including women with a history of trauma. RISE aims to help participants build the skills, knowledge and confidence to identify, avoid, de-escalate and escape potentially violent situations.

Training combines practical, context-specific self-defence with the broader benefits of martial arts and exercise for physical and mental wellbeing. Classes are adapted to participants’ age groups, communities, occupations, experience levels, past trauma and injuries, and are delivered in a safe, supportive and empowering environment. RISE also offers opportunities for participants to connect socially and develop a sense of community.

The organisation’s vision includes helping women continue their martial arts journey through supportive mentorship and transitions to suitable martial arts schools. With a focus on empowering girls, women and the wider community, RISE encourages participants to grow stronger, more resilient and more confident.
