Riverflies

The Riverfly Partnership is a UK network hosted by the Freshwater Biological Association, bringing together anglers, conservationists, entomologists, scientists, watercourse managers and relevant authorities. Its work focuses on protecting river water quality, improving understanding of riverfly populations and conserving riverfly habitats. Riverflies, including mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies, are important parts of freshwater ecosystems and useful indicators of environmental conditions. Their sensitivity to changes in water quality makes monitoring their populations valuable for assessing river health.

The Partnership coordinates projects that support citizen science and community involvement, including the Riverfly Monitoring Initiative, Extended Riverfly and Urban Riverfly. These programmes help volunteers monitor local waterways and contribute to long-term data that can inform river protection. The website provides information about riverflies and other freshwater invertebrates, recording schemes, projects, case studies, research, reports and practical resources such as identification underlays, children’s activities and printable posters. Visitors can also access news, newsletters, events and guidance on getting involved, sign up for updates, donate, or purchase Riverfly-branded clothing through its Teemill shop.
