About River Museum
The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, operated by the Dubuque County Historical Society, serves as a vibrant hub celebrating the cultural and natural history of the Mississippi River and the surrounding region. Established in 2003, the museum comprises three interconnected buildings and offers a range of engaging exhibits and experiences that highlight stories of river heritage and human innovation.
Visitors can explore diverse educational programs, including school group tours, camps, and outreach initiatives that foster an appreciation for our vital waterways. The museum also promotes conservation efforts, notably through the successful breeding and release of the endangered Wyoming toad.
In addition to rich historical exhibits, such as the Mathias Ham Historic Site and the National Rivers Hall of Fame, the museum features a Tidepool Touch Tank for an interactive marine experience. Through memberships and various support initiatives, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium aims to inspire stewardship while creating a welcoming environment that emphasizes diversity, equity, and accessibility.
