About U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System, established by Congress in 1968, is dedicated to preserving some of the most remarkable rivers in the United States in their natural, free-flowing condition. This initiative emphasizes the importance of safeguarding the unique scenic, recreational, geologic, wildlife, historic, and cultural values of selected rivers for the enjoyment of current and future generations. The system currently protects 13,467 miles of 228 rivers across 41 states and Puerto Rico.
The program classifies rivers into three categories: wild, scenic, or recreational, based on their level of development upon designation. While protecting river quality and flow, the system also allows for responsible use, ensuring that local communities can continue agricultural and recreational activities.
