R. J. Reynolds Estate “Devotion” is a privately owned historic estate in Surry County, North Carolina, associated with tobacco executive R.
J. “Dick” Reynolds and his wife, Elizabeth “Blitz” Dillard Reynolds. Conceived and developed during the Great Depression, Devotion was envisioned as a self-sustaining community spanning more than 10,000 acres.
Its ambitious design aimed to combine the facilities and functions of a town, create employment, and contribute to North Carolina’s economic recovery. The estate reflects Reynolds’s interest in progressive design, engineering, business, and philanthropy, and the website presents it as a prototype for later national landmarks and historic buildings. Today, the site shares information about the estate’s history, its significance, and its self-sustaining facilities, alongside news, family material, and project updates.
Visitors can subscribe to receive announcements about events and projects. Devotion is not open to the public for viewings or tours. The website directs readers to DevotionEstate.
