About Your Wild Life Team
The Public Science Lab is a collaborative network of scholars who explore everyday life through research spanning ecology, evolution, biodiversity, humans, and food. Based at North Carolina State University’s Department of Applied Ecology, the lab brings together people from diverse disciplines and institutions, while inviting the public to take part in scientific discovery. Its projects connect research with education, culture, and practical experiences.
Wild Sourdough, part of the Science of Sourdough initiative, invites participants to grow wild starters and help investigate how geography and flour influence microbial growth, bread taste, and texture. The Never Home Alone project uses iNaturalist to document organisms found in homes, with classroom activities designed for students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The lab also offers fermentology mini-seminars on the ecology, evolution, history, and culture of fermented foods, alongside archived talks, teaching resources, publications, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Through these projects and learning materials, the Public Science Lab makes research accessible and encourages people to contribute observations, questions, and ideas
