About robinsight
Gareth Robins’ curiosity for how people and freight move began in the jump‑seat of his father’s Piper Cherokee and on the forecourts of BP stations where, as a teenager, he started gathering data to cut food waste. That habit of turning observation into practical evidence carried him through 23 years at BP and into EROAD, where he led the decision‑science programme that transformed raw telematics into the Road Network Insights portfolio and proved that anonymised GPS traces could guide safer speed management, smarter maintenance priorities and fairer regulation.
RobInsight
When a restructuring closed his role in 2022, he chose not to slow down. Instead, he launched Robinsight – unlocking GPS data for better transport decisions – to keep asking better questions for the public good. Today, Robinsight stewards location feeds from more than 200,000 heavy and light vehicles, blending them with policy context and engineering know‑how to surface patterns that councils, Waka Kotahi and international partners can act on while protecting every operator’s commercial confidence.
The company’s story is still unfolding, but its principles are set: start by listening so the real problem is clear, treat privacy as a first‑order constraint, and measure success by the safety, efficiency and resilience that citizens experience on the road rather than the volume of data processed. By turning private data into public insight – and doing so with humility and rigour – Robinsight shows how evidence can help a small, connected nation make better calls about where and how we travel.
