About Rockbridge Area Transportation System
Rockbridge Area Transportation System, Inc. (RATS) provides safe, affordable, door-to-door transportation for residents of Rockbridge County and the cities of Lexington and Buena Vista, Virginia. Serving the area since 1995, RATS offers rides to local and regional destinations, including Staunton, Fishersville, Lynchburg, Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Richmond.
Its transportation services are designed for people with a wide range of abilities. Drivers are trained and certified in Passenger Assistance, Safety and Sensitivity (PASS), and vehicles are equipped to accommodate and secure wheelchairs. RATS accepts Medicaid plans from Aetna, Anthem, Humana, and Sentara, some Veterans benefits, and private payment.
In partnership with HomeLink Health, the organization also provides a limited number of free or reduced-fare rides to medical appointments for eligible people who need help affording transportation. Riders are encouraged to contact the team to ask about qualification. With a focus on rider safety and accessible service, RATS connects community members with local and regional destinations.
