About Rockland Karate Dojo
Rockland Matsubayashi-Ryu Dojo is Maineโs oldest dojo dedicated to traditional Okinawan Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu karate. Established in Rockland in 2006, it moved to the Penobscot Bay YMCA in 2009 and is a member of the World Matsubayashi-ryu Karatedo Association. Led by David Troup sensei, a fifth-degree black belt, under the direction of WMKA president Yoshitaka Taira, the dojo teaches the style founded by Grandmaster Shoshin Nagamine in 1947.
Training covers the fundamentals of Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu, including its 18 traditional kata, seven choreographed Yakusoku Kumite drills, and sparring. The dojo also offers Okinawa Kobudo training, with students pursuing belt promotions in the discipline. Classes are geared toward adults and teenagers; students as young as 10 may participate when accompanied by a parent or guardian who also trains. All classes are free for Penobscot Bay YMCA members. The dojo welcomes participants at any level and presents karate as a way to develop focus, confidence, coordination, reflexes, stamina, and overall health.
