Roots n Permaculture is the teaching and community-building practice of Rakesh “Rootsman Rak,” who has taught across the UK, Europe and India for more than a decade. Its work helps people develop practical skills and collaborate to create regenerative change in their own communities. Guided by the idea that permaculture is about redesigning how people live and work together, the approach combines whole-systems thinking, hands-on learning, humour and reggae-inspired creativity.
The practice focuses on four connected areas: permaculture design for land, homes and communities; forest gardening and edible landscapes that support wildlife, build soil health and sequester carbon; sociocracy for fair, self-organised group decision-making; and community building through networks, gatherings and shared projects. Courses and workshops also cover energy and electricity, cook stoves and biochar, holistic life design, children and youth, and teacher training. Learning resources include design tools, plant information, sociocracy materials, project examples and a free radio show featuring music and practical introductions to permaculture. A monthly newsletter shares insights, resources and course updates.
