The Royal Archaeological Institute (RAI) is a UK archaeology society founded in 1844. Its work encompasses the archaeological, architectural and landscape history of the British Isles, bringing together people interested in exploring and understanding the past. The Institute supports research and public engagement through a programme of lectures, meetings, visits and conferences, with events open to members and, in some cases, non-members. Members can attend in-person lectures, access recorded talks, join regional conferences and take part in tours and visits to historic sites.
The RAI publishes the Archaeological Journal, a newsletter and reports from its summer meetings, and provides access to a digital catalogue of past journal issues. It also offers grants for archaeological research, alongside dissertation prizes and bursaries, and recognises achievement through its Archaeological Achievement Awards. Membership includes access to the Society of Antiquaries of London’s library, described by the Institute as the UK’s oldest and most important archaeological research library, as well as two newsletters each year.
