Royal Liver Friendly Society was a Liverpool-based mutual organisation founded on 24 July 1850 by nine workingmen at the Lyver Inn on St Anne’s Street. Formed amid the social hardship and population growth associated with the Irish Potato Famine, the Society provided members with simple burial cover, helping families meet funeral costs and avoid a pauper’s grave. From modest beginnings, it grew into one of the world’s largest friendly societies and operated until 2011.

This website preserves and shares the Society’s history, its people, and its connection to Liverpool. It traces key periods in the organisation’s development, including its founding years, the work of figures such as John Bates Lawrence, and the story behind the Royal Liver Building. The building, created as the Society’s headquarters and now a recognised Liverpool landmark, is a central theme. Visitors can explore historical articles, photographs, and gallery material, read blog posts, and contribute personal or family memories. The site also outlines plans for a history of the Society, intended for publication as an e-book.
