About RUMA Alliance
The Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture (RUMA) Alliance, established in 1997, is a key player in promoting food safety, animal health, and welfare in the UK's livestock industry. As an independent non-profit organization, RUMA comprises 26 representatives across the food supply chain, advocating for best practices in the responsible use of veterinary medicines. RUMA's initiative, the Targets Task Force, has significantly contributed to achieving a 52% reduction in antibiotic use since 2014, focusing on complying with government objectives to refine and replace antibiotics in animal agriculture.
RUMA provides evidence-based guidance and develops collaborative frameworks to enhance animal health while ensuring public health and environmental protection. Their campaigns, such as #Colostrumisgold, aim to raise awareness about responsible medicine use in livestock sectors, including cattle, sheep, pigs, and poultry. Dedicated to tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR), RUMA fosters innovative practices and encourages continuous education in the veterinary field, positioning the UK as a leader in responsible agricultural medicine use.
