RUTA is an international scholarly association bringing Central, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe, the Baltic region, the Caucasus, and Central and Northern Asia into global conversation. It provides a platform for researchers, artists, activists and other participants to examine the histories, societies and contemporary issues of these regions, while challenging conventional geographical and academic perspectives. RUTA supports this work through membership and a continuing network of people who share ideas and mutual support.

Its activities include an annual conference, webinars, events and collaborative projects, as well as news and resources for its community. The association also shares research and discussion through publications, a photo gallery and recorded webinars. Topics featured in its programmes include freedom, rooted knowledge, colonialism, authoritarianism, gender, global health, Romani histories and dialogue between Europe’s East and Latin America.

By connecting regional perspectives with wider debates, RUTA fosters exchange and discussion across disciplines and borders. Its conferences and online events offer opportunities to engage with diverse voices and explore the region’s past, present and possible futures
