Heart Care & Research Foundation Rwanda
@rwandaheartcentre.org
The Rwanda Heart and Research Centre is a multi-collaborative project, working together with many institutions across the world to make this hospital and research centre a reality. We are currently building a not for profit "state of the art" heart centre for children and adults on the new Health Campus in Kigali, close to the new University Hospital, the Robert Koch Institute and IRCAD Africa. Patients in need will be able to access the services free of charge. The centre is part of the Global Professor Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation. Rwandan nurses and perfusionists are enrolled in a three-year master's programme. The new centre will improve knowledge and healthcare, skills and healthcare delivery. The hospital building's sustainability standards are internationally certified (ARUP). - The Rwandan government has been at the forefront of implementing innovative measures to enhance both environmental sustainability and public health. Recognizing the severe impact of plastic pollution, Rwanda was among the first countries in the world to ban plastic bags, a move that significantly reduced environmental degradation and promoted the use of eco-friendly alternatives. This bold step was part of a broader strategy to foster a cleaner, greener country. To further engage its citizens in environmental stewardship, the government introduced a monthly initiative known as Umuganda, or community clean-up day. On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandans across the country participate in local clean-up activities, fostering a sense of communal responsibility and unity while improving the cleanliness and aesthetics of their neighborhoods. Additionally, Rwanda has instituted Car-Free Sundays every fortnight, dedicating Sunday mornings to mass sports and health education. It encourages physical activity, reduces vehicular emissions, and promotes a healthier lifestyle among its citizens. These events transform city streets into safe havens for walking, running, and cycling.

The Foundation collaborates with various partners, including the Egyptian Agency for Partnership and Development, which has pledged vital equipment support. A significant aspect of the initiative is advancing medical research and education within Rwanda, reinforcing the belief that quality healthcare should be accessible to all. Through this ambitious project, the Rwanda Heart Care and Research Foundation strives to make a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of the Rwandan population.
