About RYERSON INDEX
The Ryerson Index is an Australian, volunteer-run resource that helps people locate death-related notices published in newspapers and other sources. Its free index covers Australian newspaper notices from the Sydney Gazette in 1803 to recent publications, and includes death and funeral notices, along with some probate notices and obituaries. Since 2020, the project has also indexed notices from funeral directors’ websites, extending its coverage in response to regional newspaper closures.
Ryerson has especially strong coverage of New South Wales newspapers, including more than two million notices from the Sydney Morning Herald, while its collection of sources from other states continues to grow. The index is a research aid rather than a primary source: it directs users to the original notice, but the organisation does not undertake genealogical research on their behalf. Volunteers regularly add records, and the site is generally updated weekly.
Ryerson also shares data with medical research and educational organisations for social-benefit projects, while maintaining genealogy as its primary purpose
