About The Saami Council
The Saami Council, also known as Sámiráđđi, is a voluntary Saami organization that represents Saami member organizations in Finland, Russia, Norway, and Sweden. Established in 1956, it is one of the longest-standing indigenous peoples' organizations. The primary goal of the Saami Council is to promote the rights and interests of the Saami people in the four countries where they reside.
They work towards achieving recognition for the Saami as a nation and maintaining their cultural, political, economic, and social rights through legislation and agreements. The Saami Council addresses issues related to livelihoods, rights, language, and culture of the Saami people, offering opinions, proposals, and rendering decisions on these matters. The organization is led by an Executive board, consisting of the President and Vice Presidents, who work collaboratively to handle the council's tasks and strive for consensus.
