The Southern African Confederation of Agricultural Unions (SACAU) is a membership-based regional farmers’ organisation representing the shared interests of farmers across southern Africa. It has 19 national farmers’ association members in 12 countries and represents small, medium and large-scale commercial farming communities. Officially recognised by COMESA and SADC as the farmers’ voice on agricultural development, SACAU also works with regional, continental and global institutions through strategic and operational partnerships.
SACAU promotes, advances, protects and defends farmers’ common interests. Its work focuses on strengthening farmers’ organisations, improving the representation and influence of farmers, and fostering cooperation among members, policymakers, governments, research institutions, businesses and development partners. It provides a forum for member organisations to discuss shared concerns and helps communicate their views and information to relevant stakeholders. The organisation also supports farmers’ participation in agricultural policy and development processes. A founding member of the Pan African Farmers’ Organisation, SACAU is associated with Agricord and the World Farmers’ Organisation.
