About Société astronomique de France 🇲🇫
The Société astronomique de France (SAF), also known as the French Astronomical Society, was founded in 1887 by Camille Flammarion. Their objective has remained the same over the years: to popularize the sciences of the Universe and involve amateurs in their advancement. Open to everyone, the SAF promotes the development and practice of astronomy through various activities.
They welcome the public at their three astronomical observatories in Paris and the south of France. The SAF manages fifteen specialized commissions, produces publications like l’Astronomie and Cadran Info, and organizes conferences, lectures, and courses in astronomy. They also encourage collaboration between professional and amateur astronomers, operate an optics workshop, and organize astronomical gatherings and trips.
The SAF awards prizes and medals to recognize important achievements, including the prestigious Prix Jules Janssen, which is given to a professional astronomer for their scientific work and their contribution to the dissemination of astronomy. With a strong international dimension, the SAF continues to promote the wonders of the universe to a wide audience
