Safe Stadium

SAFE STADIUM is a European Union-funded project focused on strengthening the protection of large sports facilities against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats. It brings together universities, security organisations, police services, medical institutions and sports venues to develop an integrated approach to the safety of mass events. The project supports EU plans to improve public-space protection and preparedness for CBRN risks.

SAFE STADIUM’s work includes assessing facility vulnerabilities and security needs, identifying risks, and developing security plans, procedures and technical specifications. Its resources are designed to help venues prevent, detect and respond to incidents, manage their consequences, and improve infrastructure, information and communications technology, and equipment. The project also develops evacuation and medical-response guidance, recovery procedures, and an electronic tool for investigating potential contamination zones linked to infectious disease spread.

To support practical implementation, SAFE STADIUM provides training programmes, e-learning courses that use virtual reality, guidance for trainers and trainees, and large-scale exercises. Its intended outcome is a comprehensive CBRN protection system that can be applied across sports facilities.
