About SAFECAST
SafeCast is an international volunteer-driven non-profit organization that aims to provide citizens worldwide with accessible, accurate, and granular environmental data. Founded in response to the devastating earthquake and nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, SafeCast quickly began monitoring and collecting information on environmental radiation, expanding its scope to include air quality as well. All this data is published freely into the public domain under a CC0 designation.
SafeCast embraces open-source and open-data methodologies and utilizes new fabrication technologies, enabling rapid development and collaboration on a global scale. The organization values inclusivity and non-partisanship, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds. Through energetic outreach activities such as workshops, talks, and educational programs, SafeCast shares its experiences and empowers individuals and groups worldwide.
SafeCast is committed to providing people with accurate information to make their own informed decisions. The organization is funded by individuals, grants, and charitable foundations, maintaining independence from financial contributors and donors. Data collection is primarily done by volunteers using SafeCast-designed hardware, allowing them to freely measure areas they deem important.
Quality control measures are in place, but no warranties or guarantees are provided. SafeCast is proud of its work aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and continuously plays a major role in the global emergence of technically competent citizen science efforts. Join the SafeCast community and help contribute to the global environmental data movement today
