Safer Birth Project

SAFER Birth Project is a UK-based organisation focused on making pregnancy, birth and postpartum care safer and more compassionate for survivors of sexual trauma. Founded by specialist doula, educator and trauma-informed practitioner Michaela Kalusová, the project helps maternity and perinatal professionals understand how earlier trauma can affect care and how to respond with sensitivity.

Its professional offer includes foundational and advanced trauma-informed maternity care training, workshops for NHS and private services, and team training and organisational partnerships. The programme combines evidence and practical guidance on consent, communication and reducing retraumatisation, using the project’s S.A.F.E.R. model.

SAFER Birth Project also provides non-clinical support for women and birthing people. Services include one-to-one birth preparation, survivor-informed birth planning, grounding and self-regulation skills, postpartum birth debriefing, and advocacy with maternity teams. The organisation supports a broad range of professionals, including midwives, doulas, nurses, obstetric staff, health visitors and perinatal mental health practitioners. Based in Bromley, London, it offers in-person support in London and virtual services nationwide.
