About SAFMC
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) is a prominent brand in the world of fisheries conservation and management in the U. S. Established by Congress in 1976, SAFMC is one of eight regional fishery management councils responsible for managing fisheries within U.
S. Their jurisdiction covers the waters off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and east Florida to Key West. SAFMC's primary responsibility is to develop and amend fishery management plans that ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery resources they manage.
They work closely with scientists, stakeholders, and industry partners to set annual catch limits and management measures based on the best available science. Additionally, they conduct public hearings and seek input from the public on proposed fishery management actions. With a focus on sustainable and ethical fisheries management, SAFMC manages over 64 species of finfish, crustaceans, and corals through eight fishery management plans.
They collaborate with other regional fishery management councils to address management needs across jurisdictional boundaries. SAFMC consists of 17 members, including citizens from the southeastern states. The council meets four times a year, involving public participation through scoping meetings, public hearings, and input at council meetings.
Their transparent and inclusive approach ensures that all stakeholders have a voice in the decision-making process. For more information about SAFMC and their efforts to protect our valuable marine resources, visit their website or follow them on their social media platforms
