About SAIDA STONE
Saida Stoneworks is a traditional stonemasonry workshop based in Hoki, Kameoka, Kyoto, where it has practiced its craft since 1902. Rooted in the region’s stone culture and Kyoto’s aesthetic traditions, the workshop specializes in processing and carving stone for temple architecture and Japanese gardens. Its work includes stone lanterns, torii gates, garden stones, and other crafted pieces, carrying techniques and local heritage into new forms.
Alongside traditional commissions, Saida offers a range of stone products, including candle holders, coffee grinders, and pieces such as MeiMei Kou and MeiMei Zara. The workshop also takes part in exhibitions, tours, and stone-carving workshops in Japan and overseas. Visitors can experience Kameoka’s long connection with stonemasonry by creating alongside its artisans and learning about the landscape, history, and ways of life that inform the craft. Through its products, projects, and hands-on experiences, Saida Stoneworks continues to shape stone into cultural objects while sustaining the skills and stories behind them.
