The South African Jockey Academy (SAJA) develops apprentice jockeys through a combination of education, race-riding instruction and athlete support. Its programme brings together academic teaching, equine studies and practical riding coaching, preparing apprentices for the demands of professional horse racing. The Academy’s educators cover subjects including mathematics, science, languages, history, business and consumer studies, alongside equine studies and related modules.
SAJA’s riding department includes coaches with extensive experience in South African and international racing, including former professional jockeys who have worked in several racing regions. The Academy also provides multidisciplinary support for apprentices, with services spanning nursing, sports science, biokinetics, fitness coaching, sport psychology and dietetics. Staff members additionally assist with apprentice affairs, administration, finance, accommodation and meals.
