Samantha Matherne is a professor of philosophy at Harvard University whose work explores aesthetics and the connections among imagination, beauty, perception, and creativity. Drawing on both philosophical and literary traditions, her research engages thinkers and writers including Immanuel Kant, Jane Austen, and William Wordsworth. Her scholarship examines how imagination shapes epistemic, aesthetic, and ethical life, bringing questions about art and experience into conversation with broader philosophical concerns.
Matherne is the author of Seeing More: Kant’s Theory of Imagination and a volume on the Neo-Kantian philosopher Ernst Cassirer in the Routledge Philosophers Series. She co-wrote The Geography of Taste, a book devoted to aesthetic diversity, and edited the first English translation of work by twentieth-century German philosopher Edith Landmann-Kalischer, published as Edith Landmann-Kalischer: Essays on Art, Aesthetics, and Value.
Her website presents her research, books, articles, essays, reviews, works in progress, talks, and teaching. It also provides information about her background and a way to contact her professionally.
