About Sametinget
The Sámi Parliament is a democratically elected indigenous parliament representing the Sámi people across Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia. Established in 1989, it aims to enhance the political position of the Sámi community and advocate for their interests on national and international stages. With 39 representatives elected every four years, the Plenary Assembly governs the Sámi Parliament, addressing key issues affecting the Sámi people.
Led by President Tom Sottinen and Executive Council Chair Silje Karine Muotka, the parliament develops policies and policies in areas such as language, culture, and education. The Sámi Parliament operates autonomously, prioritizing the needs of the Sámi people through dialogue and community engagement.
