The South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) is a maritime training institution based in Simon’s Town near Cape Town, serving learners in South Africa and the international shipping industry. It provides practical, simulator-based instruction designed to develop maritime skills and support professional training standards. Its facilities include bridge, engine room, refrigeration, ECDIS, GMDSS and long-range communications simulators, with equipment from providers such as Force Technology, STN Atlas and Poseidon.
Courses cover engine room operations, refrigeration, communications and bridge training, including modules for ASD and tractor tugs. SAMTRA also offers STCW safety and ancillary courses delivered in a classroom setting, accredited superyacht training through a joint venture with Professional Yachtmaster Training, and SAMSA-approved pre-sea programmes for cruise ship passenger service personnel. Instruction is delivered by experienced former seafarers trained in simulation instruction and maritime teaching.
In addition to its educational programmes, SAMTRA lists trainee management and crewing services among its offerings. The academy aims to prepare skilled maritime professionals through training grounded in operational experience
