The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is an independent non-profit organisation dedicated to saving lives through the collection, testing and distribution of blood. Since 2001, it has worked with volunteer donors and healthcare providers to supply patients who need transfusions because of trauma, surgery or illness. SANBS operates in eight of South Africa’s nine provinces, while the Western Cape is served by the Western Cape Blood Service. It also supports other countries in the SADC region and supplies more than one million blood products annually.
Donations are separated into red blood cells, plasma and platelets, allowing one donation to help up to three patients. SANBS offers information and support for donors, including eligibility guidance, donation-process details, donor centres and blood drives. Its products and specialist services include blood products, serum eye drops, reagents, clinical apheresis and stem cell harvesting, stem cell processing and storage, immunohaematology, tissue immunology, cytogenetics and proficiency testing. Through its collection, testing and distribution work, SANBS helps maintain a safe and reliable blood supply for patients.
