Sandanbeki Cave is a historic sightseeing attraction in Nanki-Shirahama, Wakayama, Japan, set beneath 60-meter-high cliffs. Its approximately 200-meter cave is associated with a legend that the Kumano navy, known from the Genpei War, concealed its boats there. Visitors can explore recreated guard quarters and learn about the area’s maritime history, while experiencing waves crashing close to the cave and viewing natural features such as the whale-like blowhole. The cave also houses Muro-Daibenzaiten, a large bronze statue revered as a spiritual power spot.
The attraction offers cave and surrounding-area guides, scenic viewpoints, photography spots, and seasonal experiences, including the Starry Cave night walk with a guide. A cliffside café, footbath, original merchandise, and a treasure-themed puzzle activity add further options for visitors. The site provides elevator access and welcomes wheelchair and stroller users; pets are permitted subject to carrying or carrier conditions. Open year-round, Sandanbeki Cave also provides visitor information, access details, a photo gallery, and suggestions for exploring nearby sights.
