About SANEF
The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) is a non-profit organisation bringing together editors, senior journalists and journalism trainers from across South Africa’s media. It works to protect freedom of expression and strengthen a media landscape that is free, diverse, ethical and trusted. SANEF advocates for media freedom and journalists’ safety, and engages with policy through submissions and research.
It also promotes journalism excellence through education and training programmes, free publications, and forums for discussion on media ethics and credibility. Its initiatives address racial and gender diversity, support ethical journalism, and defend the right of media workers to report without fear of reprisal, harassment or intimidation. SANEF’s work includes programmes focused on elections, disinformation, community media, freelancers, sustainability and media relief, access to information, and journalists’ safety and wellness.
The organisation also hosts events and journalism awards, including the Nat Nakasa Awards and the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards, and runs an annual fundraiser
