About Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History
Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History is dedicated to preserving and showcasing a remarkable collection of biological, ethnographic, and historic artifacts. These meticulously preserved items serve as educational and informative exhibits, offering a glimpse into the past and contributing to the cultural heritage of the Santa Cruz community. Housed in a historic Carnegie Library building dating back to 1915, the museum can only display a fraction of its extensive collection at any given time.
With over 16,000 specimens and artifacts, the collection is a treasure trove for scholars and artists alike. Scholars can request access to study specific pieces, while artists are welcome to observe and draw the specimens on public display. Notable among the collections is the Laura Hecox Collection, featuring shells and marine life collected by lighthouse keeper Laura Hecox in the early 1900s.
