About SASA
SASA (Science & Advice for Scottish Agriculture) is a Scottish Government organisation providing scientific services, advice and resources to support agriculture in Scotland. Based at Roddinglaw Road in Edinburgh, it works across crop health, seed quality, pests and pathogens, and environmental and agricultural issues. Its specialist capabilities include diagnostics for plant viruses, potato diseases, genetically modified material, bacteria, insects and antibodies, alongside DNA fingerprinting and molecular genotyping. SASA also undertakes research and development, including epidemiology and population dynamics, and offers training and resources for users seeking technical information.
The organisation publishes and maintains practical tools and datasets, such as crop variety databases, potato variety information, pesticide survey data, seed potato classification resources, crop and producer registers, and variety statistics. It provides seed sampling and testing information, including current fees, and shares reports and guidance on topics such as integrated pest management, climate change and unsolicited seeds. Through its scientific work, publications and stakeholder information, SASA helps inform agricultural practice, plant health monitoring and related policy in Scotland.
