SASTEP is the South African Sanitation Technology Enterprise Programme, a national platform that aims to accelerate the adoption of innovative and emerging sanitation technologies in South Africa. With a focus on local manufacturing and commercialization, SASTEP supports and empowers both sanitation innovators and entrepreneurs. The program collaborates with these partners to ensure the translation of suitable sanitation technologies into the marketplace.

Created by the Water Research Commission in partnership with the Department of Science and Innovation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, SASTEP operates under the WRC's transformational vision for sanitation. The program's objectives include developing a demonstration platform, integrating the sanitation industry into the national economic development framework, promoting the uptake of new technologies, supporting local manufacturing, advocating for policy changes, promoting gender equality, and documenting business and service models. With SASTEP, the goal is to create a rejuvenated South African sanitation industry that provides everyone with access to dignified sanitation, minimizes pollution, and promotes health, safety, and water security
