About Satoyama Initiative
The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) is a global coalition comprising over 250 organizations committed to fostering societies that harmonize with nature. Launched in 2010 at the Convention on Biological Diversity in Nagoya, Japan, IPSI aims to address the challenges facing socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS), which are vital for maintaining biodiversity, culture, and local economies. IPSI promotes sustainable resource management strategies that reflect local knowledge and practices, ensuring these methods benefit both present and future generations.
The organization facilitates collaborative activities, case studies, and workshops, encouraging diverse stakeholders to share insights and best practices. Its initiatives align with global standards such as the Aichi Targets and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Founded on the principles of the Ecosystem Approach, IPSI serves as a platform for dialogue and partnership-building, helping its members develop resilient systems that uphold traditional practices while safeguarding the environment.
Through its secretariat at the United Nations University, IPSI actively supports its mission to nurture positive human-nature relationships worldwide
