Sheffield Bird Study Group (SBSG) is a registered charity founded in December 1972 to bring together birdwatchers in Sheffield and surrounding areas with an active interest in ornithology. Its recording area spans twelve 10-kilometre squares, from the outskirts of Barnsley to Chesterfield, and from the lowlands beyond Rotherham and Bolsover to the Peak District National Park. The group aims to encourage interest in birds across the community and provide activities and information for birders of all experience levels.
SBSG coordinates local bird recording and fieldwork, and works alongside other organisations for the benefit of birds. Its website offers a sightings database, recent reports, species information, maps and site guides. Activities include indoor talks, field meetings and other events, as well as survey and commission work, including a survey of Sheffield’s parks. SBSG also produces annual reports, bulletins and books about local birdlife, including The New Birds of the Sheffield Area.
