The Statesman is a renowned student newspaper that has been serving Stony Brook University for over 60 years. Originally known as the Sucolian, it was founded in 1957 for the State University Campus On Long Island at Oyster Bay before becoming The Statesman in 1958. As a non-profit organization incorporated in 1975, The Statesman is funded by advertising and the Stony Brook University Undergraduate Student Government (USG).

This newspaper is editorially independent from the university and USG. The Statesman publishes new stories online from Monday to Friday. Prior to the pandemic, they also released a print issue every Monday during the academic year, which was distributed on-campus, at the Stony Brook University Hospital, and over 70 off-campus locations.

However, due to recent circumstances, The Statesman has transitioned to a digital-only format. Throughout its existence, The Statesman and its editors have received accolades from esteemed organizations such as the Society for Professional Journalists, Newsday, and the Society for News Design. Many of its former editors have gone on to achieve successful careers in journalism.

The Statesman maintains a commitment to accuracy, promptly correcting any factual errors and clarifying confusing statements. Their comment policy encourages relevant and respectful engagement, with moderation in place to maintain a constructive conversation. Overall, The Statesman has been a trusted source of news and information for Stony Brook University students for decades, and continues to adapt to the ever-changing media landscape
