Tracking Back is a website created by Rob Spencer for exploring genetic genealogy and population genetics through interactive tools, research, and visualizations. Its focus is helping people make more of personal Y-DNA data by using original algorithms to reveal patterns in ways that can be easier to interpret than large tables or spreadsheets. Visitors can use simulators to explore DNA patterns and understand what results may be reasonable to expect, or paste data from Family Tree DNA to visualize information drawn from many participants.
The site also features research reports explaining Spencer’s observations, methods, conclusions, and the mathematics behind some of the tools, alongside talks and a gallery of static images and examples. Its software runs in the visitor’s browser, with no server or database maintained by the site; data users bring is not stored or visible to others. Tracking Back is intended for people interested in the science and methods of genetic analysis, rather than individualized ancestry research or any particular region or haplogroup
